I don't think theres many who consider the ST a great computer for playing
beat em ups. Theres a full history of naff conversions and plainly awful
games. IK+ is probably the best of a poor crop and this suffers from limited
variety in gameplay. Manhatten Dealers is to be honest rubbish but it has its
own set of charms that at least make it playable in a funny sort of way. You
take the role of a plain clothes policeman sent in to beat up the bad guys and
recover the drugs from drug barons in a seedy American City, not sure which.
WHAT am I saying its Manhatten hence the title. Firstly it begins with the
Caffeine Ring, then nicotine then onto hard drugs etc. So as you can see
theres a bit of humour in the game which helps. One of the first things
noticable is the sound is pathetic. The main bloke sounds a bit jewish,
fiddler on the Roof style when he takes a hit. The aaarghhhh noises are
pretty pathetic from the baddies too. The scrolling of the characters seems to
be practically the length of the sprite itself and its got a wierd sort of
jerk to it. Still it gets the job done I suppose.
The way of replenishing your energy is incredibly suspect. You take the drugs
you've recovered from the baddies you beat up, to an oil drum fire and burn
them. You are then invigorated by the fumes. A great family orientated
storyline.
The highly irritating stuff. Your having a punch up with the enemy and people
at nearby windows keep throwing bricks at you at the same time.
The chainsaw baddie who is situated in a cellar off the first screen is an
american general. Err.. aren't they meant to be good guys. Be amazed by the
antigravity fall of the general down the stairs. He floats down.
You can kick dustbins about but for what purpose?
The music is grating. Its like one part of some fairground music played over
and over again. Although there is different music for certain areas like China
town.
You've only got about four moves. Punch, kick, high kick and behind kick no
streetfighter 2 jumping about here.
All in all its a pretty funny beat em up. Compared to something like Double
Dragon or Final Fight it seems no better or worse technically but its
definitely more amusing.
Graphics: 5/10
Sound: 8/10 (because its funny)
Playability: 5/10
Overall 7/10
